If, as Voltaire argued, history is philosophy that teaches us by example, then the lesson of the Soviet experience should challenge our basic preconceptions concerning government interference with free market processes. Not only socialist policies, but interventionist policies which derive their justification from the same pretense of knowledge must be challenged. Perhaps we have finally learned the lesson that the history of the Soviet Union has to offer us.
