Scott Scheall

Scott Scheall was previously a Postdoctoral Fellow with the F.A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics and a philosopher in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society at Arizona State University. Scott is a former Research Fellow at Duke University’s Center for the History of Political Economy. He is co-editor of Research in the History of Economic Thought and Methodology and his work has appeared (or is scheduled to appear) in Philosophical Investigations, Journal for the History of Economic Thought, History of Economic Ideas, and Journal of Economic Methodology.

Scott is currently engaged in two major research projects concerning F.A. Hayek’s epistemology. The first, a product of Scott’s dissertation project, considers Hayek’s philosophy of science. The second, the focus of Scott’s book, Politics as a Knowledge Problem: F.A. Hayek and the Epistemic Burden of Effective Policymaking, addresses the role that epistemic considerations played in Hayek’s criticisms of both socialism and countercyclical macroeconomic policies, and the related question of the extent to which Hayek provided an explicitly epistemic defense of his own classical liberalism. In the end, Scott argues, the recognition of the largely unexplored problem of the knowledge requirements of an effective political liberalism represents a new field of philosophical, historical, and scientific inquiry: Hayekian political epistemology
