Alain Marciano is a Professor at the University of Turin in the Department of Economics and Statistics and member of the LAMETA (UMR CNRS-INRA 5474) research center in Montpellier. He is also a distinguished affiliated fellow with the F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics. His work focuses on the history and methodology of recent economics and, more specifically, "law and economics" and "public choice". He is particularly interested in the birth of these fields in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s. He is fundamentally interested in understanding how economists analyzed "order", coordination and interdependence among individuals. He is currently working on two (complementary) main projects: the concept of externalities, harmful effects (and market failures) and how it was treated in the 1950s-60s in the USA in economics and in "law and economics"; the emergence and structuration of "law and economics" around the concept of responsibility, tort law, and its connection with externalities. In addition to books and book chapters, he has published articles in HOPE (History of Political Economy), the Journal of the History of Economic Thought, the European Journal of the History of Economic Thought, the International Review of Law and Economics, Public Choice, Constitutional Political Economy, Biology and Philosophy, and the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization.
